A change in the paddock
This mentee has committed to implementing timed multi-paddock rotational grazing as a primary practice change. This approach involves strategically rotating livestock across multiple paddocks at scheduled intervals to optimise pasture health and productivity. By timing grazing rotations to coincide with pasture growth stages, the mentee aims to improve soil health, enhance nutrient cycling, and promote biodiversity. Additionally, this practice change aligns with regenerative agriculture principles by mimicking natural grazing patterns and fostering ecosystem resilience.
In addition to rotational grazing, the mentee has committed to sowing multispecies pasture to diversify vegetation on their farm. This practice involves planting a mixture of grasses, legumes, and forbs to improve soil structure, increase nutrient availability, and provide a more balanced diet for livestock. By incorporating a variety of plant species, the mentee seeks to enhance pasture resilience to environmental stressors, such as drought or pest pressure, while promoting overall ecosystem health and productivity.
The mentee also plans to increase the planting of yellow box community trees on their property. This practice aims to restore native vegetation and support biodiversity conservation efforts. Yellow box trees are important for providing habitat for native wildlife, improving soil stability, and enhancing ecosystem services such as pollination and carbon sequestration. By expanding the presence of these trees, the mentee contributes to the restoration of natural ecosystems and the preservation of local biodiversity.
Reflecting on their experience in the RAMP program, the mentee highlights the value of group discussions, readings, videos, and farm visits as the most enjoyable aspects. Engaging with fellow participants, learning from educational materials, and observing real-world farm practices provided valuable insights and inspiration. As advice to future RAMP participants, the mentee recommends familiarizing themselves with program materials
