Snapshot of practice changes:
Creating a vision for what we want for ourselves and our farm
But why?
Wanting to approach managing our farm in a more holistic manner and in a manner that will take us into the future with certainty.
Data Collection, recording data and monitoring farm system
But why?
Realising the importance of data collection and monitoring as a means to implement regenerative farming and analyse whether our decisions have been the right decisions.
Regular reading for research
But why?
Needing more information on regenerative farming practices and wanting to increase my knowledge. For example soils and cover cropping.
Valuable information for farmers
Through the RAMP workbook, and advice provided by their mentor and fellow farmers, this participant was able to learn more about:
- Recovery time after grazing
- Sowing multispecies pasture
- The importance of diversity in soil health.
Experience on the RAMP
When asked what they enjoyed most about the program, the participant noted ‘’the online nature of the program’ and ‘meeting other farmers interested in regenerative farming’.
When asked ‘if you were going to share some advice to someone who is about to begin the RAMP program, what would it be?’ the participant gave the advice – (1) Attend as many of the monthly Zoom meetings as you can (2) Be ready for lots of new information and ways of doing business (3) Be ready to be challenged (4) Enjoy the journey.
Increasing ground cover
The farmer has now transitioned to 85% ground cover after participating in RAMP and felt they had very strong knowledge on how to maintain ground cover to minimise erosion and soil loss.
Additionally the participant felt they had very high knowledge when considering:
- The extent and type of biological activities in soils on your property.
- The production benefits of applying biological soil supplements (e.g., compost, manure or microbial inoculants).
- The benefits of cover cropping.
And both regenerative agriculture principles and practices!
