On-farm changes
Tim Dougherty from Tabulam NSW has committed to making several impactful changes in his agricultural practices. The first significant change involves the use of homemade bio-fertilisers. This decision was influenced by a field day organised through the RAMP program, which demonstrated the benefits and practicalities of using bio-fertilisers. This hands-on experience provided Tim with the knowledge and confidence to implement this sustainable practice on his farm.
The second practice change Tim has committed to is the adoption of multi-species pastures. This change was driven by extensive online research that highlighted the advantages of diverse plant species in promoting soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and improving pasture resilience. The insights gained from his research have convinced Tim of the long-term benefits of multi-species pastures for his farming operations.
Tim particularly enjoyed the presentation on Ecosystem Services by Brian Wehlburg, finding it the most beneficial to his learning. This presentation provided valuable insights into the interconnectedness of various farm elements and the importance of fostering ecosystem services for sustainable agriculture. The comprehensive coverage of this topic helped Tim better understand and appreciate the broader impacts of his farming practices.
The mentorship provided by mentor Gavin Tinning was exceptional, offering critical support and guidance throughout the program. The RAMP booklet was also beneficial, serving as a great starting point for upcoming topics and helping to structure Tim’s learning journey. Tim enjoyed the group discussions most, valuing the opportunity to share experiences and learn from peers. For future improvements, Tim suggests incorporating some live on-farm lectures to enhance the practical learning experience.
