On-farm changes
Michael Pratt from Hillville in NSW has undertaken significant modifications to his farming practices as part of his involvement in the mentoring program. A key change he has implemented is increasing animal density on his property. This decision was largely influenced by Brian’s encouragement, which highlighted the benefits of more intensive grazing systems for improving land use efficiency and enhancing soil health.
Michael has also adopted the use of biological fertilisers to support root growth and soil biology. This practice shift was motivated by insights gained from a lecture on soil health, which emphasised the importance of nurturing soil ecosystems through the use of biological amendments. The introduction of biological fertilisers is expected to improve soil structure and enhance the microbial life necessary for robust plant growth. This change reflects Pratt’s commitment to enhancing soil fertility and achieving long-term sustainability on his farm.
Michael’s experience with the mentoring program has been notably positive, particularly in terms of the mentorship provided.
Michael praised Brian’s role in the program, noting that Brian’s encouragement was instrumental in helping him rethink and refine his farming practices. Pratt also valued Lorraine Gordon’s lectures, which contributed significantly to his understanding of regenerative agriculture. The group interactions, including discussions with Brian and other mentees, were highlighted as a valuable aspect of the program, providing a supportive network.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the program for Michael was the comprehensive presentation on soil health by Nicole Masters. This presentation was particularly beneficial in deepening his understanding of soil management practices. The opportunity to learn from various experts and engage in meaningful discussions with fellow mentees enriched Michael’s knowledge base and provided practical insights that he has applied to his farm.
For future iterations of the program, Michael suggested providing explicit, practical guidance with detailed steps to enhance applicability.
